Alvis Ltd, formerly known as Alvis PLC, is an international manufacturer of armored fighting vehicles and other specialty military vehicles. It has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. Alvis was formed in Coventry by Mr TG John in 1919 to manufacture motor cars.
Alvis’ product portfolio includes approximately 20 different wheeled vehicles and 16 tracked vehicles, ranging in size from the parachutable, 1.9-tonne, 6×6 wheeled Supacat to the 62-tonne Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. It also develops tactical bridges, precision gunnery training simulators and battlefield management systems, and provides training and through-life vehicle support services.
Alvis has customers in more than 40 countries around the world. It operates through a number of operating subsidiaries: Alvis Vickers Limited (including its Alvis Bridging Limited subsidiary), Alvis South Africa (Pty) Limited (including its Alvis OMC and Alvis Gear Ratio subsidiaries) and Alvis Hagglunds AB (including its HB Utveckling, Alvis Moelv AS and Patria Hagglunds Oy subsidiaries).

Takeover by BAE Systems Plc
On 17 August 2004, BAE SYSTEMS plc (‘BAE Systems’) announced that the recommended Offer made by BAE Systems for the existing issued and to be issued share capital of Alvis plc (‘Alvis’) had been declared unconditional in all respects. The board of BAE Systems now announces that at 3.00 p.m. (London time) on 14 September 2004, BAE Systems had received valid acceptances of the Offer in respect of a total of 75,828,410 Alvis Shares, representing approximately 68.3 per cent. of the issued ordinary share capital of Alvis.Prior to the commencement of the Offer Period, BAE Systems owned 31,882,534 Alvis Shares, representing approximately 28.7 per cent. of the issued share capital of Alvis. BAE Systems did not acquire any further Alvis Shares during the Offer Period. Accordingly, BAE Systems now owns or controls, or has received acceptances of the Offer in respect of a total of 107,710,944 Alvis Shares, representing approximately 97.0 per cent. of the issued ordinary share capital of Alvis.
Alvis plc ordinary shares delisted on LSE wef 16 September 2004.
