Description and history
FiberNet Telecom Group, Inc. (FiberNet) provides interconnection services enabling the exchange of voice, video and data traffic between multiple, global networks. The Company owns and operates colocation facilities and diverse transport routes in the gateway markets of New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. The Company’s network infrastructure and facilities are designed to provide broadband interconnectivity for network operators, including domestic and international telecommunications carriers and service providers. In its network-neutral colocation facilities, FiberNet provides racks, cabinets and customized caged spaces for its customers to deploy networking equipment and establish network points of presence. The facilities are located in the carrier hotels of gateway markets. The Company also provides redundant power systems, environmental controls and security for customers’ colocation needs at these network aggregation points. FiberNet’s services include transport services, colocation services and communication access management. In September 2009, Zayo Group, LLC completed the acquisition of the Company.

Transport Services

FiberNet’s transport services are delivered over an open architecture to support multiple technologies. The Company provides optical wavelengths and broadband circuits with capacity ranging from 1.5 megabits per second to 10 gigabits per second. It offers transport services utilizing different transmission protocols, including the SONET and TDM protocols used primarily in North America and the international protocols, SDH and PDH. FiberNet Telecom also provides Ethernet and Internet protocol (IP) connections from 10 megabits per second to one gigabit per second.

The Company provides interconnectivity through its optical and electrical transport networks within and between carrier hotels and other network aggregation points. It offers intra-building connectivity, as a lit service and on dark fiber, for transport between floors of these buildings, and it offers inter-building connectivity as a lit service between these buildings within a metropolitan area. The Company provides its customers with off-net connectivity on networks that FiberNet does not own. Customers purchase these services from the Company to benefit from its network design, provisioning and management expertise. FiberNet sells this connectivity to its customers and purchases the underlying circuits from other telecommunications carriers. The Company offers off-net transport in markets that it serves, other metropolitan markets that it does not serve with its own networks, and on a long-haul basis to connect metropolitan areas. These services are offered as part of a turnkey solution to FiberNet’s customers, providing them with a single point of contact to order additional network capacity and to manage ongoing network operations.

In New York City, FiberNet operates the 60 Hudson Street Meet-Me-Room. A centralized, carrier-class cross connection facility, the 60 Hudson Street Meet-Me-Room enables the Company to offer its customers a single facility within the carrier hotel where they can cross connect, or privately peer, with one another through optical, coaxial and copper terminations. FiberNet’s hubbing services consolidate and aggregate traffic by grooming high bandwidth circuits to lower bandwidth circuits for distribution over its networks. FiberNet also provides hubbing services that include protocol conversion capabilities to interconnect domestic and international traffic.

On its networks in New York City, FiberNet provides native metro Ethernet transport and Dedicated Internet Access services. Ethernet transport provides dedicated, committed bandwidth over point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections for Ethernet hubs and virtual private networks. The Company’s Dedicated Internet Access services utilize multiple, diverse connections to Tier 1 Internet backbones. These services can be purchased in granular increments with burstable and flat rate billing plans to scale with its customers’ network growth needs. FiberNet offers global gateway services through its carrier-grade technology platform that enables communications providers to exchange voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) traffic. It is built on an Ethernet switching architecture, incorporating gateway functionality and switch partitioning capabilities. The platform enables the migration of legacy voice traffic to an IP environment, and also exchanges domestic and international voice traffic between legacy systems.

Colocation Services

In its network-neutral colocation facilities in carrier hotels, FiberNet provides its customers with a secure, reliable location to house their networking equipment and to establish network interconnections with a choice of other networks. The Company offers its standardized racks and cabinets or customized cages of colocation space, with redundant supplies of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) power to operate their equipment. These facilities have backup generators, fire protection capabilities, industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and security systems.

FiberNet offers additional services, including remote hands services, which are provided by the Company’s professional services organization, Availius. Through its remote hands services, customers have around the clock access to FiberNet trained technicians to assist in network equipment deployment, routine maintenance and troubleshooting. The Company also assists in the design and deployment of its customers’ installations, as well as their ongoing maintenance.

Communications Access Management

In certain commercial office buildings, FiberNet Telecom manages the communications access and infrastructure for the buildings. The Company enters into agreements with service providers so that they may provide services to tenants in the buildings.

The Company competes with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Level 3, Qwest, tw telecom, XO Communications, Equinix and Switch and Data.
