Description and history

Besides offering a wide range of technologies and print speeds, GENICOM printers offer multiple combinations of features that make them suitable for diverse applications. GENICOM printers are used with desktop workstations and with various networks and stand-alone configurations in conjunction with micro-, mini-, super-mini and mainframe computers. The Company also provides spare parts and supplies such as print heads, printed wire boards, ribbons and printer cartridges for GENICOM and other manufacturers’ printers. On March 10, 2000, GENICOM filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.

GENICOM had been operating in violation of its credit facility since the third quarter of 1999. On February 25, 2000, GENICOM received formal notice from its lender group of the occurrence of certain events of default under the credit facility, including the Company’s failure to make required principal and interest payments. The notice also stated that all amounts due under the credit facility had been accelerated and were fully due and payable. The lenders immediately began exercising all of their rights and remedies, including their right to offset the Company’s bank accounts and foreclose on their collateral.

The Company offers the full spectrum of printing technologies (line matrix, serial matrix and laser) from a single source. The Company’s high-performance printing solutions are designed to be integrated easily with major network architectures. Combining the latest print engine, networking and software technology, GENICOM printers deliver network functionality to IT (information technology) departments and advanced printing and paper handling features to end users.

GENICOM line matrix, serial matrix and laser printer families include models with twinax and coax emulation for AS/400 environments. GENICOM’s IBM-compatible printers offer performance and durability. Many models include features such as auto interface switching between coax/twinax, parallel and network, and hex pass-through for controlling specialized functions such as bar codes, oversize text and IBM configuration options.

GENICOM’s e-forms solution, called Intellipress, allows the elimination of costly pre-printed forms, quick update of forms as needed, and the reduction of paper-handling costs and overall paper usage. This is particularly valuable during the migration from serial or line matrix printers to laser printers. Intellipress software is entirely printer-resident, and is available on GENICOM’s full line of laser printers.

GENICOM produces a variety of impact and non-impact printers that support Windows, Windows NT, Novell and Unix operating systems, as well as OpenVMS VAX and Alpha server environments. They also support TCP/IP and IPX/SPX for Novell Netware, and EtherTalk for Macintosh.
