H.E.S. Beheer N.V., headquartered in Europoort Rotterdam, Netherlands, is a holding company whose subsidiaries are engaged in the provision of logistical services in ports. The activities are aimed at securing the continuity of the group and promoting optimum performance of the group companies. Although there is substantial delegation of powers to the managements of the subsidiaries, as a holding company H.E.S. Beheer plays a role that goes beyond that of a stock market vehicle. H.E.S. Beheer is represented in the group’s participating interests in proportion to its holding. As (co-)shareholder and via membership of the Supervisory Boards, it plays an active role in the group subsidiaries and participating interests.
H.E.S. Beheer was founded in 1908. At the time, Rotterdam was undergoing strong growth, boosted by the opening of the Nieuwe Waterweg (1872) and the growth of the German hinterland. Shipments of iron ore to factories in the German Ruhr, of German coal to overseas ports and of grain to destinations along the Rhine gradually increased. Rotterdam became an important transhipment port for dry bulk products.
The companies in the H.E.S. Beheer group are primarily active in handling dry and wet bulk products. These services focus mainly on storage, transhipment and processing of a varied package of dry and wet bulk products for industrial end-users including energy market, the steel and aluminum industry, the animal feed industry and the oil-seed processing industry. The main concentration of HES Beheer’s activities is in the Netherlands. The company has also a group company based in the United Kingdom.
H.E.S. Beheer is an independent two-tier company. Shares in H.E.S. Beheer are listed on the Official Market of Euronext Amsterdam N.V.
The Company specializes in logistic services for ports (loading, unloading and storing voluminous products). The group’s activity is organized around three product families:

Net sales are distributed geographically as follows: the Netherlands (92.9%) and the United Kingdom (7.1%).
Description and history
The Company is a holding company for providers of logistical services in ports. These services focus mainly on storage, transhipment and processing of a varied package of dry bulk products for industrial end-users. Examples include raw materials for the energy market, the steel and aluminium industry, the animal feed industry and the oil-seed processing industry. The main concentration of the Company ‘s activities is in the Netherlands. There is also a group company in the UK and a participating interest in Thailand.
The Company Rotterdam, was formed in 1908. It remains so today, at the start of the 21st century.
Until the mid-1980s, the character and results of the Company were determined primarily by the performance of its subsidiary Graan Elevator Maatschappij (G.E.M.) B.V. GEM was active in the storage and transhipment of grain, oilseeds and raw materials for animal feed, known as agribulk products.
Mainly as a result of European Community agricultural policy, there has been growing pressure on the agribulk segment in West European ports. In order to reduce dependence on agribulk transhipment, the company decided in 1983 to materially broaden its base. Attention focused on acquiring further interests in the port and transport sector, and on activities closely associated with the traditional core activities. At the same time, policy continued to be directed towards maintaining and strengthening the position in the agribulk sector.
This policy took shape partly through the development of New Holland Bulk Services Ltd. in North Lincolnshire and Hull (UK) and through the successive acquisitions of:
– A 60% interest in Frans Swarttouw B.V., a stevedoring business founded by the striking port entrepreneur Frans Swarttouw, that has operated in Rotterdam port since 1887. When the Company acquired 60% of Frans Swarttouw in 1985, the company was active in the transhipment, storage and processing of coal and industrial minerals. Frans Swarttouw also held participating interests in other leading stevedoring companies, i.e. EMO/EKOM B.V. in the Rotterdam Maasvlakte and OVET B.V. in Terneuzen.
– The grain storage and transhipment company Europoort Silo B.V. (1986)
– All the shares in Bell Lines Ltd., a company that provided integrated ‘door-to-door’ container transport services between Ireland, the UK and the European Continent (1986)
– The Interstevedoring group, specialising in floating transhipment of both agribulk and mineral bulk products, with a 99.9% interest in OBA Group B.V., a bulk stevedoring business in Amsterdam (1991)
– The remaining 40% of the shares in Frans Swarttouw, resulting in the full ownership of this company (1991)
At the end of 1993, Interstevedoring and Frans Swarttouw underwent a legal merger with GEM, giving rise to European Bulk Services (E.B.S.) B.V. in its present form. In view of this merger, the Company decided at the time to define storage, transhipment and processing of dry bulk products as its core activity and disposed of a number of subsidiaries, including Bell Lines Ltd.
In 1999, interests were acquired in Rotterdam Bulk Terminal B.V. (RBT) in Vlaardingen (40%) and Maas Silo B.V. (15%). RBT concentrates on the ‘smaller’ dry bulk market and on new activities in the dry bulk market, while Maas Silo is active in the storage and processing of foodstuffs and vegetable oils. In 2001, OVET became a strong co-shareholder in the OBA Group B.V. and the Company interest in this company was reduced to 49.97%.
Rotterdam was undergoing strong growth, boosted by the opening of the Nieuwe Waterweg (1872) and the growth of the German hinterland
