Description and history
The Bank and Insurance Holding Company was created in 1998 through the merger of Cera Bank,the Kredietbank and the Bank Van Roeselare into the Bank, and through the union of ABB-insurance, Omniver Leven, Omniver and Fidelitas into KBC Insurance. The Bank & Insurance Group builds on the strengths of the Group, More Particularly and primarily its wide-ranging know-how, experience and systems regarding retail and commercial banking, life assurance, non-life insurance, asset management, trade and project finance, money and capital market activities, and derivatives. The fundamental goal of the Bank and Insurance Holding Co is to be an independent, medium-sized bancassurance institution in Europe, as well as one of the most profitable, underpinned by a strong position on the Belgian market and the steady expansion of its international activities.

On 2 March 2005, the Extraordinary General Meetings of Shareholders of Almanij and The Bank and Insurance Holding Company approved the merger of Almanij and KBC, proposed by their respective Boards of Directors on 23 December 2004. The merger has resulted in the acquisition of Almanij by KBC Bank and Insurance Holding Company and the creation of the new KBC Group NV.
The principal entities of the new KBC Group NV are KBC Bank, KBC Insurance, Kredietbank SA Luxembourgeoise, KBC Asset Management and Gevaert. KBC Group NV will be quoted on the Euronext Brussels stock exchange as of tomorrow and its ticker symbol remains ‘KBC
