HISTORY :

The Company was incorporated on 5 September 1996 and listed to the Alternative Investment Market of London Stock Exchange on 6 January 1997.

Company’s primary activities consist of construction of privately owned homes and apartments, trading in land and buildings, and the development of residential land for third parties and in joint venture. The Company is incorporated in Ireland on September 6th 1996.

Company was founded in 1909 by Thomas McInerney. The Company began in the construction industry as a small housebuilding operation in the Clare region, but would later develop into the biggest Irish-based international construction company.

In the early 1940s the Company established an office in Gort, County Galway, where it was involved in building housing, schools and a number of other contracts. In 1949 the company was incorporated as Thomas McInerney & Sons, with one of its first major construction projects being the new jet runway at Shannon airport.

In the early 1950s Company started building in the Dublin area, commencing with large local authority housing contracts in the Ballyfermot area. It was also involved in the development of the science buildings in UCD at this time.

When the recession hit Ireland in the mid ’50s, Company decided to expand into the UK market and opened an office in Watford. The company went on to become a major local authority and private housing developer in the South of England. Here, it pioneered the timber framing housing technique and developed joint venture housing concepts with housing associations in the UK – a first for the UK housing market. Back in Ireland at this time, one of the more notable projects completed by the company was the construction of the old Hogan Stand in Croke Park.

By the late 1960s, Company was building in every major population centre in Ireland. It was the first volume builder in the housing market and by this stage was also involved in a number of commercial projects.

In 1971 the company went public, in what was at the time the largest ever-public flotation in Ireland and was 11 times over subscribed. Company’s Properties was formed and Amby McInerney (son of Thomas McInerney) was appointed Chairman. Amby and his brother Dan held the posts of Joint Managing Directors for a number of years.

With a recession in Ireland in the 70s, the Company looked to new markets and in 1975, McInerney Properties took advantage of the buoyant Middle Eastern market. By 1980, it was operating successfully in five gulf countries in the contracting and portable building markets. It had an office in each country and employed over 2,000 people. A diverse range of projects were carried out by the company including office blocks, local government housing, palaces and banks as well the construction of the Irish embassy in Saudi Arabia.

Iberia and the leisure market became a focus for the Company in the 80s. It established a base in Iberia and developed a number of exclusive high quality country club resorts in Portugal and Marbella. Company’s Properties was also a partner with British Land and Hardwicke who developed the IFSC in Dublin, with construction starting in 1986.

In 1987, Amby McInerney retired as Chairman of the Company and Dan McInerney took up Chairmanship.

Following the collapse of the UK housing and construction market in 1989, the company underwent a major restructuring, following which, the company as it is now known – McInerney Holdings plc – was formed.

Today, the Company is one of Ireland’s leading construction companies, with divisions specialising in various aspects of the market. It has operations in Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom. In the business for over 90 years, the Company name is synonymous with good quality homes and construction.
