Power Grid Corporation of India Limited is a publicly quoted company primarily engaged in the transmission of electric power in India. The company was incorporated in 1989 as National Power Transmission Corporation Limited. It has its registered office in New Delhi, India.
Power Grid owns and operates a network of transmission lines and infrastructure that constitutes most of India’s interstate and inter-regional electric power transmission system and carries electric power across India. As of March 2007, the company owned and operated 59,461 circuit kilometers of electrical transmission lines and 104 electrical substations.
Power Grid also provides transmission-related consultancy services, such as system engineering and feasibility studies, the review of load dispatch and communications systems, contract and procurement services, turnkey execution of transmission and sub-transmission projects, supervision of rural electrification projects, the implementation of intrastate availability-based tariffs, and the preparation of distribution code. In addition, it owns and operates a fibre-optic cable network of approximately 19,000 kilometers in 60 Indian cities. The company is the central transmission utility of India. It aims to establish and operates the regional and national power grids to facilitate transfer of electric power within, and across the regions with reliability, security and economy, on sound commercial principles.

The Company is mainly engaged in the business is transmission of bulk power across different states of India. The company also involves in planning, coordinating, supervising, and controlling inter-state transmission systems. In addition, it operates unified load despatch and communication schemes and regional load despatch centers, as well as provides consultancy services in the areas of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution, and telecom sectors in India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Nigeria, and Dubai. The company owns and operates a transmission network of approximately 75,290 ckt kms of inter-State transmission Lines; and 124 EHV and HVDC substations with transformation capacity of approximately 83,100 MVA. It also operates broadband telecom network of approximately 22,000 kms connecting approximately 110 cities.
The Company was incorporated in October 23rd of the year 1989 as the National Power Transmission Corporation Limited with the responsibility of planning, executing, owning, operating and maintaining the high voltage transmission systems in the country. The company name was changed to the present name Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) with effect from October 23rd of the year 1992.
1989 The Company was incorporated as the National Power Transmission Corporation.
1992 Transmission assets from National Thermal Power Corporation Limited, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited & North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited were transferred to our Comp. pursuant to legislation promulgated by Parliament.
1992 The name of The Company was changed from National Power Transmission Corporation to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
1993 Transmission assets of Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited were transferred to our Comp. pursuant to a memorandum of understanding executed between the parties.
1994 The Company. took over the management of Southern Regional Load Despatch Centre.
1994 The Company entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Power, Government of India, which is revised annually. We achieved the highest rating of ‘Excellent’ under the memorandum of understanding.
1995 The Company took over the management of Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre & the North Eastern Load Despatch Centre.
1996 The Company took over the management of remaining two regional load despatch centres, namely, the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre & the Western Load Despatch Centre.
1998 The Company formulated an Environment & Social Policy & Procedures code to deal with environmental & social issues relating to its transmission projects. 1998 Our Comp. was formally notified as a Central Transmission Utility by the Government of India.
1998 The Company was declared as a Mini Ratna Category i public sector undertaking by the Government of India.
2001The Company was granted Infrastructure Provider II license [IP IIs] from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India to pursue leasing of bandwidth capacity to various customers on its telecommunications network.
2002 The unified load dispatch & communications schemes for northern & southern regions were commissioned.
2002 The Company was appointed as the Advisor-cum-Consultant under the Accelerated Power Development Reform Program by Ministry of Power, Government of India for power sector reforms.
2002 The Sasaram HVDC back to back transmission system developed by our Comp. was commissioned leading to the completion of first phase of construction of the National Grid.
2002 The 2,000 MW Talchar-Kolar bipolar HVDC link developed by our Comp. was commissioned.
2003 The Company entered into a joint venture arrangement with The Tata Power Company Limited implementing a part of entire transmission system associated with Tala Hydro-Electric Project which was the first public-private sector initiative in the transmission sector.
2003 The 400 KV Raipur-Rourkela line transmission line developed by our Comp. was commissioned & the Western region, Eastern Region & North-Eastern Region begin operating in a synchronised manner with a cumulative capacity of 50,000 MW
2003 The Company secured its first international consultancy contract from Bhutan Telecommunications
2006The Company entered into an agreement with Rural Electrification Corporation Limited & certain state governments & state utilities for undertaking rural electrification works under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkaran Yojana in nine states.
The Company has informed that the Ministry of Power vide its Order dt. October 15, 007 has conveyed the acceptance of President to the resignation tendered by Sh. M S Kapur, from the Directorship of Comp. w.e.f. October 05, 2007.
The Company has been selected for Government MoU Excellence Award for year 2006-07. The MoU Excellence Award benchmarks performance of Central public sector undertakings & is given by Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises to only one public sector utility in a sector for its extraordinary performance.
The Companyhas appointed the following persons as non-official Part-time Directors on the Board of POWERGRID:

2. Shri. Ashok Khanna, Ex-President, PHD.
The Company has informed that Ministry of Power vide their Order dated July 23, 2008 conveyed appointment of Smt. Sarita Prasad, IAS [Retd.s] as part-time non-official Director on the Board of POWERGRID for a period of three years w.e.f the date of assumption of charge of post or until further orders whichever event occurs earlier.
The Company has set up a joint venture Comp. with Teesta Urja Ltd for developing transmission system to evacuate power from the upcoming 1,200 MW Teesta-III Hydro Electric Project in Sikkim
