Description and history
Riverstone Networks, Inc., incorporated in September 1996, designs and manufactures routers and switches that enable national carriers, service providers, governments and large corporations to convert network bandwidth into differentiated services over legacy and next-generation infrastructures. The Company’s metro routers and provisioning solutions deliver the ease of use, cost effectiveness and flexibility that carriers require in meeting their customers’ Internet protocol networking requirements in support of voice, video and data services. Riverstone also has a professional services group that assists customers in designing, building, expanding and maintaining their mission-critical networks. In January 2003, the Company acquired Pipal Systems, a Santa Clara, California-based development-stage networking company.

The Company’s family of RS routers is designed for the metropolitan area network, which encompasses service providers, the Internet infrastructure connecting these service providers with their customers and the Internet backbone within the geographic area of a city. These products combine carrier-class routing features and interface versatility with important service creation technologies such as multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) for layer-2 virtual private networks (VPNs), bandwidth management, dynamic provisioning, hardware-based accounting data collection and quality of service.

The ES family of switches is the Company’s response to demands from mission-critical network operators for cost-effective carrier class Layer 3 switching. From LAN (local area network) access switches to server farm and LAN core switches, the ES family delivers wire speed switching performance and port density. Riverstone’s ES family of switches combines traffic prioritization at the user and application level and high-availability technology that increases network uptime to deliver carrier class solutions for mission-critical networks.

The Riverstone Management Center (RMC) consists of the RMC-EM (Element Manager), offering element management, and the RMC-SA (Service Activator), offering end-to-end service activation and assurance. The RMC-EM is a complete element management system, using Hewlett Packard’s (HP’s) Network Node Manager at its core. It provides device configuration, inventory management, as well as performance and fault data collection. The RMC-SA for VPN management and service activation is based on HP’s Openview Service Activator platform (HPOV-SA) for Riverstone. This is a turnkey software package designed to provision and manage Layer 2 and 3 MPLS VPNs. While the RMC-SA for VPN has been developed to support Riverstone’s VPN features and architectures, its open framework can also support additional VPN and equipment types in a heterogeneous network environment.

Riverstone’s technology services provide design and operational expertise for network upgrades, management, capacity measurements and problem resolution. For customers that require high-performance, reliable networks, the Company offers advanced design and consulting, as well as engineering, furnish and installation. The Company also offers custom solutions that are tailored to meet individual customer support and service needs. With its custom solutions, Riverstone works with carriers, educational institutions, large corporations and government organizations to bring reliability to mission-critical networks.
