HISTORY:

1853
SIG Swiss Industrial Company was founded in 1853 as a train car manufacturing plant. The proximity to the largest waterfalls in Europe and to the ironworks in Laufen favored the company’s foundation and subsequent development. The know-how acquired throughout the years was transferred to other activities, enlarged and developed. By strengthening its core competences and by acquiring further companies, SIG evolved into an international group that today, operates on all five continents of the world.

SIG’s founding fathers: Friedrich Peyer, Conrad Neher and Heinrich Moser

SIG starts production of small arms.

1906
To offset the economic downswings of the train manufacturing and small arms businesses, SIG commences production of packaging machines.

Due to the large distances that have to be covered at the SIG plant site, SIG begins production of electrical vehicles.

1944
SIG’s extensive experience in the construction of small arms and in the treatment of steel eventually leads to the construction of high-quality pneumatic hammers.

1989
Through the acquisition of PKL Pack- und Kunstoffwerke Linnich in Linnich, Germany, SIG enters the field of liquid packaging. The company packages milk, juice, soups, and sauces.

1995
Due to the concentration process in the rolling stock industry, SIG spins off its rail vehicle business unit and incorporates it into a joint-venture with FIAT, where SIG has an interest of 40%.

Over 250 people will be employed at the new plant which will begin operation during 2004. The local operation will enable SIG to be more responsive to customer requirements, improve customer service and shorten delivery time.

Effective October 2002 SIG announces the acquisition of Ryka Blow Molds Ltd., located in Mississauga near Toronto, Canada. With this acquisition, the SIG Group enhances its access to the North American Market. Through this acquisition, the group strengthens its competence as a supplier of complete systems to the beverages industry. The unit will be integrated into the SIG Beverages Division.

Founded in 1853 the company turned into a international packaging group which now makes good use of the Jubilee Year and its motto to strengthen links and look forward to positive achievements. During the Jubilee Year, various inward-looking events and celebrations will be held. They are directed at supporting the new corporate strategy, bringing together cultures and creating a common feeling of ‘us’ within the group.
