Company Overview
Universal Display Corporation is an American company active as a world leader in the development of organic light emitting device (OLED) technologies. OLED technologies are used in flat panel displays, lighting and other opto-electronic applications. It was founded in 1994 by Sherwin I. Seligsohn. The company’s facility is headquartered in Ewing, New Jersey which houses the technology research and development, fabrication of engineering prototypes, and technical assistance departments.
The company’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art OLED technology and services to OLED manufacturers for the enhancement of their products’ features and competitive advantage. Universal Display Corporation’s intellectual property portfolio contains approximately 725 issued and pending patents worldwide. It has exclusive license rights to these technologies. Covered with the license are the technology developed by the company’s technology team, by researchers at Motorola, Inc. and by its academic research partners at Princeton University, University of Michigan, and the University of Southern California. The company is also engaged in patent and technology licensing, technology research and development, and technology assistance. These services are catered to manufacturers and users of flat panel displays and other opto-electronic products.
Some of its technology and development and licensing partners include Tohoku Pioneer Corporation; Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.; and AU Optronics Corporation. In addition, the company has made several other collaborations with industry leaders such as Sony Corporation, Seiko Epson Corporation, and Toyota Industries Corporation. Universal Display has further established collaborative research programs with other academic researchers at Pennsylvania State University, Kyung Hee University in Korea, and National Taiwan University. Government partnerships include the Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Energy.
Universal Display is one of the members of the United States Display Consortium, an association of public and private companies offering flat panel display and flexible microelectronic products. It also a founding member of the Flexible Display Center (FDC) at Arizona State University.
Business Summary
Universal Display Corporation is engaged in the research, development and commercialization of organic light emitting diode (OLED), technologies for use in flat panel display, solid-state lighting and other applications. OLEDs are thin, lightweight and power-efficient solid-state devices that emit light, making them suitable for use in full-color displays and as lighting products. The Company licenses OLED technologies to manufacturers of products for display applications, such as cell phones, MP3 players, laptop computers and televisions, and specialty and general lighting products. In addition, it also develops OLED materials and sells materials to those product manufacturers.

Phosphorescent OLED Technologies

Phosphorescent OLEDs utilize specialized materials and device structures that allow OLEDs to emit light through a process known as phosphorescence. Phosphorescence reduces the power requirements of an OLED and is useful for hand-held devices, such as mobile phones, where battery power is often a limiting factor. Phosphorescence is also essential for large-area displays, such as televisions, where higher device efficiency and lower heat generation may enable longer product lifetimes and increased energy efficiency. The Company supplies its technology to Samsung SMD and LG Display.

Additional Proprietary OLED Technologies

The Company’s research, development and commercialization efforts also encompass a number of other OLED device and manufacturing technologies, including the TOLED Transparent OLEDs, FOLED Flexible OLEDs, OVPD Organic Vapor Phase Deposition, UniversalP2OLED and OVJP Organic Vapor Jet Printing. TOLED Transparent OLEDs use a transparent cathode and either a transparent, reflective or opaque metal anode. TOLEDs utilizing transparent cathodes and reflective metal anodes are known as top-emission OLEDs. In a top-emission AMOLED, light is emitted without having to travel through much of the device electronics where a portion of the usable light is lost. FOLEDs are OLEDs built on non-rigid substrates, such as plastic or metal foil. This enhances durability and enables conformation to certain shapes or repeated bending or flexing. FOLEDs may be capable of being rolled into a cylinder, similar to a window shade.

The OVPD process utilizes a carrier gas stream in a hot walled reactor in a low pressure environment to deposit the layers of organic material in an OLED. The OVPD process may offer advantages over the vacuum thermal evaporation (VTE) process through materials utilization and deposition control. OVJP technology is a direct printing method for the manufacture of OLEDs. OVJP technology avoids the OLED material wastage.

The Company competes with Eastman Kodak Company, Sumitomo Chemical Company, Sumitomo, Idemitsu Kosan, Merck KGaA and BASF Corporation.
